Student Work Portfolios

Each week your child will bring home their Student Work Portfolio. This will include all of their graded work for the week.  Take some time to look over the work and sign the form in the front.  Please leave all graded work in the folder until the end of the 9-week grading periodYou may remove all ungraded work and parent notes.

If your child has failed a class assignment, I will reteach the concept to him in school. He will then have an opportunity to redo the assignment for an improved grade.  The new grade will be noted on the original assignment and included in the work portfolio at a later date.

If your child has failed an assessment, I will continue to work with him on the content. He will have multiple opportunities to show mastery of the content. The highest assessment grade will be recorded in the grade book up until the 9-week grading period closes.

At Caldwell Elementary, we feel it is just as necessary for students to learn how to manage their behavior as it is for them to learn new academic skills.  It is important for students to understand that they have control over their own behavior, as well as control over problem solving strategies that will allow them to avoid unnecessary conflict and aggression.

The 3 Bs behavior program used at Caldwell Elementary is based on students learning to be responsible for their own behavior and learning to make appropriate choices both in and out of school.  The program is designed to reward students as they demonstrate appropriate behavior.  At the same time, students are helped to problem-solve their choices when they behave in an inappropriate manner.

Your child’s daily behavior will be noted on his Behavior chart.  While I would like for you to check in with your child each day and see how school went, I will only be requiring you to sign the folder on Fridays. However, if behavior becomes a problem at school, daily parent signatures may be required.

Your child's Citizenship grade for each 9-week grading period will be influenced by their 9-Week Behavior Chart.

The 3 Bs are:

Homework will be assigned in the following areas:

Reading: Students are required to read a minimum of 30 minutes a day for at least 5 days a week. Students will log their reading in the planner. The title of the book and the pages read need to be recorded. If the entire book is read in one sitting, this should be noted instead of listing the number of pages.

Math: Students will receive math homework every Friday. The front of the homework consists of 10 skill practice problems. These problems will focus on a skill that was taught during the week week. The back of the homework consists of 4 word problems. These problems can either be a review of material from the previous week or it may include the new content from the current week.

Spelling: Spelling words will be introduced on Fridays and can be found on the Newsletter. Spelling will be practiced in school, however students are encouraged to practice outside of school as well. Test will be given on Thursdays. Students will be required to write their words in both print and cursive. (**Note: Spelling will not start until roughly the 5th week of school. This allows enough time for students to learn and practice writing in cursive.)

*Failure to complete homework can result in any of the following:               responsibility mark on the behavior card, loss of classroom                 money, or the need to attend homework club for assistance.*

*A homework club will be offered for students who are having trouble completing homework at home or need support from me. Your child may come to me as early as 7:00am on Tuesday-Thursday. They may even grab breakfast beforehand and bring it to the classroom.*

Grading

All work that earns a grade below a 70% will be re-taught in class by me.  Your child will be given a 2nd opportunity to re-do class work.  The highest a student can make on a redo assignment for class work is a 70%.  If the “re-do” grade is lower than the original grade, the original grade will be the one recorded.

Students will be given multiple opportunities to show mastery of content on assessments. The highest of these grades will be recorded in the grade book up until the gradebook is closed for the 9-weeks.
